DJB Hanmadang 2018

Team Surrey + Team UEL = Team DJB

Team DJB just hosted its FIRST Hanmadang!

The collaboration between the Taekwondo Clubs from UEL and Surrey have been going on for the last 5 years (believe it or not!). Previously there were DJB Cup Sparring and Poomsae events but after attending the Kukkiwon International Instructor Course and Hanmadang Judge Course in April 2017, Master Bae decided to host a Hanmadang instead. Master Fiaz has always been interested in Taekwondo Demonstrations, it was actually what helped him decide to choose Taekwondo.

Hanmadang actually means "Festival" in the Korean language, in this context it is a Taekwondo Festival, celebrating ALL aspects of the Korean Martial Art rather than focusing on the sport that is seen at the Olympics.

Kukkiwon, the Head Quarters of Taekwondo in South Korea, opened its first World Taekwondo Hanmadang in 1992 and internationally the US Open Taekwondo Hanmadang celebrated its 10th anniversary this year! There are a few Facebook pages for Pan-America Hanmadang and a UK Hanmadang page but there isn't much information on these events.

Everywhere else, Hanmadang has yet to take off. Will Team DJB kick-start something in the UK or perhaps even in Europe?
